"While you may not think about it, the deep sea has its own ecosystem with different plants and animals. The plants and animals that live in these cold environments, however, require special adaptations. Light does not fully penetrate to the sea floor, but these plants still undergo photosynthesis. They also produce oxygen. Deep sea plants provide food and shelter for the marine life living at these depths."- Misty Faucheux
"phytoplankton'- Phytoplankton, also known as microalgae, are similar to the plants the inhabit land plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow. What makes phytoplankton survive at the deep ocean level is the ability to adapt and grow under a lot of pressure and freezing temperatures. The lack of light in the deep sea has helped it adapt over millions of years.
'Poseidonia'- This plants grow in large clumps on the sea floor. The grow up to 132 feet below the surface a surprising measurement. The leaves of a Poseidonia are green, long and sharp. This plant produces fruit and flowers. The friut and flower in this plant are both green. This plant must receive light to be able to survive.
'Seaweed'- seaweed is a type of marine algae with very long strands on which a large number of leaves hang. Seaweed is generally light green in color but can also be brown or red. This plant can live in very deep waters up to 688 feet from the surface! These plants perform photosynthesis by using blue light, a special light in the sea.
'Algae'- Red and brown algae often share a home with seaweed on the deep-sea floor. This plant produces food for herbivorous fish which in return, provide food for carnivorous fish. Humans use algae in 70% of their mass production. Algae is found in some ice cream, canned food and beer. Algae serve as nurseries to baby fish.
'Sea Lettuce'- Sea Lettuce is a type of plant that inhabits the deep sea waters. Sea Lettuce is a type of green algae with lobed leaves. It is found attached to shells or rocks. When this plant is dry, it is white or black. It is eaten by fish and humans also.
