Information on The Deep Sea
"Over 60% of our planet is covered by water more than a mile deep. The deep sea is the largest habitat on earth and is largely unexplored. More people have traveled into space than have traveled to the deep ocean realm.... "- The Blue Planet Seas of Life
According to marine biologists, the deep sea is the most mysterious biome. It is also the largest of all. This biome is scarce on food and shelter for its few animals that hold these conditions. Humans even know more about the surface of the moon and Mars than our deep sea! Scientists divided the ocean in two parts, the pelagic zone and the benthic. Pelagic is the shallow parts of the ocean, where you find sand and rocks, like the picture above. The benthic zone is the deep sea in other words.
Most of the floor of the deep sea consists of mud or 'ooze', which is a way for animals to hide from predators. The bentic zone is a pitch black area where it is hard to live. Few animals and plants inhabit this zone.
Above is a map of where the deep sea is found.
